Effie Pool Sherrod Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Sherry Sandlin to honor the memory of her mother, Effie Pool Sherrod. Born and raised in Trinity, Alabama, Effie was the youngest of eleven children. One of Effie’s brothers gave Effie the price he received for a cow, which provided enough money for her to support herself for three months attending Florence State Normal School in 1915. At the age of 18, Effie “graduated” after three months at Florence State with a certificate that enabled her to take a job teaching in a one-room school that went all the way to twelfth grade. Effie married Floyd Sherrod in 1918 and was a lifelong educator.
