Joseph A. and Genevieve C. Matthews Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by the late Joseph A. and Genevieve C. Matthews. Commander Matthews was born in Vernon, AL in 1918 and graduated from Fairview High School in Cullman County in 1934 at the age of 15. He received his master’s degree from MIT in 1967. Commander Matthews joined the Navy in June of 1941 and served until his retirement on July 1, 1968. He then obtained a position at Walker College and was a member of the faculty until June of 1983. Recipients shall be full time students and preference shall be given in the following order to students from 1) Fairview High School in Cullman County, AL, Walker High School in Jasper, AL; 2) Lamar County High School in Vernon, AL.
