Marigail McCreary Mathis Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Tommy Mathis, to honor the memory of his wife, Marigail McCreary Mathis. Ms. Mathis, a native of Florence, revealed an interest in fashion as a child. When she was just a girl, the story goes, her grandmother introduced her to a sewing machine, and a love affair with textiles began. By the time she was in her 20s, she’d landed a job at Avondale Mills, the premier manufacturer of fabric for the men’s sportswear industry. In her 30s, she was vice president and one of the lead designers for her family’s company, Lexington Fabrics. She is credited with inspiring the business to begin producing fabrics for the fashion industry. Creatively, she was ready to spread her wings, according to close friends. In the late 1980s, Mathis launched her own line of clothing, Marigail!
