Hilda Mitchell Endowed Scholarship for the Arts

This endowed scholarship was established by the University of North Alabama National Alumni Association to honor Hilda Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell studied art as well as library science. She was helping the school system set of libraries in high schools across the county when was invited to teach at Florence State Teachers College, predecessor to UNA. By the time she retired in 1975, she was in charge of the program. During her lengthy career, Ms. Mitchell taught in many disciplines, including the specialized areas of calligraphy and antiquing and marbleizing techniques.
Recipients of this scholarship shall be full-time juniors and seniors enrolled in the Department of Art with declared majors in art with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Each applicant must submit two letters of recommendations from professionals, who can attest to the applicant’s artistic talents, personality and character; statement of artistic philosophy and career goals; and a folding-style portfolio of the applicant’s work. Preference shall be given to applicants who demonstrate high quality work in their portfolios, with consideration given to academic merit, talent, character and demonstrated achievement in art.
