Martha Rose and Stanley Robbins Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Martha Rose and Stanley Robbins. Mr. Robbins was born in Flomaton, Ala., and attended school in Mobile. Upon graduation from high school, he went to Dayton, Ohio, where he received his first practical training in the rubber manufacturing industry. In 1930, he returned to Alabama and settled in Tuscumbia. He purchased a manufacturing facility that had been closed for several years due to bankruptcy and developed it into Robbins Tire and Rubber, which at one time employed 1,200 people.
In 1957 in cattle barns on Shoal Creek, Mr. Robbins started National Floor Products Co. Inc. He later purchased the first site in the Florence/Lauderdale Industrial Park and was a leader in developing the industrial park. In 1994, National Floor Products was sold to the Canadian firm, Domco Industries. Today, the NAFCO plant is a subsidiary of Tarkett, one of the largest resilient flooring manufacturers in the world. Mr. Robbins was named Muscle Shoals Citizen of the Year in 1974. He was a member and director of the Florence Chamber of Commerce and one of the original members of the Florence/Lauderdale Industrial Development Committee. He served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army. He helped organize and served on the board of directors of Sheffield Federal Savings and Loan Association as well as serving on the board of State National Bank, which became Compass Bank and First Federal Savings and Loan.
Mr.Robbins also served as a member and chairman of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Board, Birmingham branch. He served on the original board of directors of Riverhill School, the Quad-Cities Junior Achievement and was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. An avid boating enthusiast, he was one of the founders and served on the board of directors of Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club. He served on the board of the YMCA of the Shoals. In his honor, the facility was renamed the “E. Stanley Robbins Branch.”
This endowed scholarship is open to full time students of every major. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need together with a 2.5 GPA.
