William G. Cale, Sr. Memorial Tennis Endowment

This endowed scholarship was established by Dr. William G. Cale, Jr. and Betty Jean Cale in honor of the late Mr. William G. Cale, Sr. Dr. William G. Cale, Sr. was the father of former UNA President Dr. William G. Cale Jr. He was born in Grifton North Carolina in 1908 and grew up in Henersonville, NC. He graduated from Furman Univeristy in 1928 with a BA degree in English. During World War II, he served as Lieutenant Commander on the battleship USS New Jersey in the Pacific fleet. He began playing tennis as a very young child. He was accomplished enough to play varsity singles in high school and college and to win several local tournaments in his youth. Tennis remained a regular recreational activity with him well into his 70s. Recipients of this scholarship are selected by the Director of Athletics and Tennis Coach, and Student Financial Services. Recipients must meet the following qualifications; first priority to members of the varsity tennis team and enrolled in good standing as full-time students in any discipline.
